Poker History

If you are interested in playing poker you may want to know how this game got started. After all, it is always a good thing to know as much as possible about the game that you spend so much time with. The good thing about this is that the game of poker has not changed too much over the years. Sure, there have been some minor changes but for the most part things have been the same. That means for year’s people have been playing poker to win money and have fun. And one thing is for sure; this will probably never change.

Even though poker has been around the world for a while, there are still some questions about how the game got started. Luckily, there are some cues that will put you on track when trying to trace the roots of the game. Most people believe that poker comes from the French and the word poque. And to take this a step further, this word more than likely is a derivative of the German word pochen. While this is not 100 percent sure, it is safe to say that it is a better explanation that anything else that is out there. Additionally, the game of poker is quite similar to as nas, a Persian game that was played on a regular basis by Persian sailors and French settlers.

As far as anybody knows, the first game was played in New Orleans in 1829. It is thought that an English actor by the name of Joseph Crowell was the first to play. He stated that he only used 20 cards, and the winner was the person who had the most valuable hand. While this is a far fetch from the way that the game is played today, it appears that this is when poker got its start. This caught on with Mississippi Riverboats, and then later on during the Gold Rush it began to spread like wild fire.

By 1970 the game of poker had made it around the United States thousands of times, and tournaments were beginning to become quite popular. It was during this time that the first World Series of Poker was played. Ever since 1970 these tournaments have been taking off, and as of late they have become quite popular both for on and offline poker players.

Along with the game growing, the language that is used by players has also developed quite a bit over the years. This holds true both in European and American cultures.

Overall, the game of poker has a deep, rich history. Although you do not need to know anything about the history of poker in order to play, the more that you know the more comfortable you will become.
